THE family of a young fisherman who drowned at Milford Haven docks are calling on the Port of Milford Haven to improve safety in the area.

The Stops at Josh campaign has been set up in memory of Josh Winsper, who died after a night out in the town in April.

An inquest held last week concluded that the 24-year-old, who had been out drinking with shipmates until the early hours, died as the result of an accident, after falling into the water while attempting to return to his vessel.

But his family say more ladders and better lighting along the dockside could have given Josh a better chance of survival.

Josh’s aunt, Rachel Gerred-Hart, said: “If you go in the water then the chances of getting out on your own are pretty slim.

“It was a tragic, tragic accident, what happened to Josh, and we cannot seek justice for Josh because there’s no justice to be had, but it stops now – no more deaths.”

The family says local fishermen and other businesses have already pledged support to the campaign, which is using the hashtag #getagrip on social media.

A spokesman for the Port said: “We are incredibly saddened by the death of Josh Winsper and our thoughts and prayers remain with his family and friends at this time.

“The coroner has completed an investigation and we have done our own internal investigation.

“The safety of our operations and of the people using our facilities is paramount and we can confirm that all of our quayside operations meet with the requirements of the Safety in Docks approved code of practice.”

A moving service to thank local people and emergency services for their help in finding Josh's body took place in Milford Haven on July 29.
