NEYLAND play park and nearby green space behind the old Infants School could become the property of Neyland Town Council.

Councillors agreed to a potential transfer of ownership of the park and land near Victoria Court at a meeting on Monday (September 5).

The council had been seeking to get the field designated as a village green, in order to keep it open to the public and protect it from development, but were told they would need to own the site.

Pembrokeshire Housing Association had previously applied to build 42 homes in the area, after it was declared surplus to requirements by the county council.

At a public meeting in June, local people said they supported building on the derelict school site, but were concerned about losing the green space.

The plans were later withdrawn.

Mayor Cllr Simon Hancock said PHA had taken on board the “strength of feeling” about protecting access to the public.

He said the county council was now offering to transfer ownership of part of the land to the town council, who would then be responsible for maintenance.

Cllr Brian Rothero said it was a “brilliant idea”, and Cllr Margaret Brace added: “If we do take this on the people of Neyland have to take it on and help look after it.
