A LOVING grandfather and uncle's dementia diagnosis has inspired his family to tackle a charity run around Cardiff Bay.

Twelve members of George Davies' family will take on the 10km challenge to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

A former president of Milford Haven United Football Club, George 'the coal' - as he is known locally - ran a coal merchants in the town for almost 60 years.

He was diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer's last year, and granddaughter Bronwen Barnard said she visits him every week, taking him family photographs and asking him questions to help with his memory.

"We are determined to support him," said Bronwen.

"He is such a kind man and is always there for others, and has always been there for us, our comfort blanket.

"He makes you smile on a bad day, and on a good day he just makes it that much better.

"Now we want to support him and raise money in the fight against this cruel disease."

Joining Bronwen for the run will be Bethan Barnard, Nia Griffiths, Ellie Davies, Sam Davies, Liam Davies, Sian Davies, Laura Davies, George Davies, Ann Davies, Megan Davies, and Niamh Davies.

The family hopes to raise at least £500 and make George proud.

Bronwen said she has never taken part in a charity run before, and will be hitting the gym as well as jogging on a weekly basis.

"My grandad loved being a part of Milford United and still tells me about it now, he is passionate about his sports so this makes us want to do this run even more," she added.
