A MILFORD Haven cadet has made history, by being named one of three local Lord Lieutenant's Cadets for 2017.

Welsh television personality Sara Edwards held her first annual award ceremony, since becoming the Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, at the Ivy Bush Hotel Carmarthen last week.

Among those honoured was Cadet Corporal Niall Hooper, who was presented with his badge of office as one of the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet of Dyfed for 2017.

Niall, who attends Sir Thomas Picton School, and is a cadet in Milford Haven, is the first ever Royal Marines Cadet in Dyfed to have been afforded this privilege.

To become one of the Lord Lieutenant's cadets, youngsters must prove themselves worthy of being able to hold the badge of office: being a senior cadet, working within the community, gaining qualifications and being a role model for young people.

Lieutenant (SCC) William Elliott RNR, commanding officer in Milford Haven, said: “Niall is a fine example of what being in a cadet force can do for you, and what you can achieve from it.

"It was a pleasure and privilege to be able to witness, along with Niall’s family, him being appointed as one of the Lord Lieutenant’s cadets - a very proud moment for him.”

Ms Edwards said she was proud to attend as the Queen's representative for the area, adding it was fitting that the cadets were recognised in the wider community.

"We all know in our world what you do, but it's important that you have a larger stage so we can champion you and make you sure you know how much we think of you," she said.
