MILFORD Haven's new mayor says he is 'very lucky' to be named first citizen of the town he now calls home.

At a meeting on Monday (May 15), Cllr Colin Sharp was handed the mayoral chains, following unanimous support from his fellow town councillors.

Proposing Cllr Sharp for the role, Cllr Yvonne Southwell the former nightclub bouncer and architect had "thrown himself into the life of the town" when he moved here with his partner Cllr Guy Woodham a decade ago.

Despite being a Londoner, she said he was now a fully-fledged adopted son of Milford Haven.

She praised his tireless work helping save the Pill Social Centre from closure, ensuring it was preserved and refreshed for the community.

"He is always approachable, dependable and kind, and will go out of his way to help whenever possible," she said.

"He is a shining example of dedication, with a hard work ethic, and will serve the town in his usual caring manner."

Cllr Sharp said he intended to use his term to get people working together for the good of the community.

"With the right attitude there's a real possibility bringing change for the better," he said.

He also appealed to all the town's county councillors to attend town council meetings, so they could work together on local issues.

His charities for the year will be Christmas Together - an annual event which Cllr Sharp runs with his husband - and consort - Guy every year, Green Acres Animal Rescue Centre, and the Torch Theatre's youth theatre project.

Paying tribute to his predecessor Cllr William Elliott, and his consort Lloyd Jones - who attended more than 250 events throughout the year - Cllr Sharp congratulated him on a successful term, in which he raised £11,000 for local causes.

"I only hope I can match their dedication," he said.

Taking over as deputy will be Hubberston member Rose Gray, with proposer Rhys Sinnett joking the duo would be a "formidable pair".

Cllr Sinnett said Cllr Gray's priorities of her faith, her family and the community would help her in her role.

Thanks were also given to town clerk and secretary Moyra and Fiona Galliford, and Sue Howells, who provided the buffet.
