Hear hear! I'm sick of the media bias towards the big oil and LNG companies which have ruined the beauty of the Milford Haven waterway.

Yes, they provide jobs - but so does tourism. And tourism is affected by the dirty monstrosities that loom over and across the waterway.

A few years ago, I brought my girlfriend to visit Pembrokeshire (she's from Dorset) and the first thing she commented on as we crossed the Cleddau Bridge was "I thought all this was National Park? It looks like that Port Talbot place we just drove through". I had to concur.
Tourism, well im afraid that doesn't put food on the table in the winter!! It can be relied upon when its pi##ing down with rain, Perhaps you should show your Girlfriend around the tourist area's out of season, when the £1 shops are closed, Cafe's boarded up. The only people you see out and about are very low paid People working for a living. The Milford Haven Waterway is Industrial, and even before that, it was a Military Installation. Now i mst pop out, and have a Coffee outside the cornstore in Pembroke....oh i cant, its Raining?
Seems you know very little about tourism. Yes there are tourists in the winter infact christmas and new year is very busy.
The tourist industry will bring more jobs and investment to the county than a handful of jobs at a nuclear sub base. Also consider that most new jobs will come from out of county, how many nuclear sub engineers live in milford haven?
Well, if you seriously insist that there is a large influx of Tourists into the towns around Milford Haven, perhaps you can tell every "Tourist shop, cafe's, Oakwood, Caldey Island, Caravan and Camping sites, etc etc" to remain open, as they must be losing thousands of pounds a year. People popping into the county for a few hours shopping does not mean Tourism, and to be honest, more leave Pembs to co into Carmarthen, Swansea, Cardiff area's to shop!! Lets be fair, Pembrokeshire Would benifit, Jobs, Housing. One Sub engineer wouldn't come on his own, 1 Sub Engineer would mean a Fleet, not a boat.
But we can argue until blue in the face, It WILL NOT happen.
Oakwood not opening could be due to the weather and caldy during the winter rough seas would be out of the question.
However what I say is true, many caravan parks are quite full during christmas and new year.
Yes many jobs for this base would come out of county.
What is wrong with developing other jobs in the area? Ok what if it was proposed to have a nuclear waste depot in pembs? Or maybe a lap dancing club? These would create jobs yes?
Sorry Coronobog, You must try harder, Oakwood closing is because its Seasonal! Caldey Island..Seasonal, boats go over in all weathers. Many Caravan Parks?? Well, at least 80% of your parks have to close because thats the law, only a few stay open through the year, but those are Resident parks. Get real bud, this isn't a waste dump, its a highly protected Military base. I will say it again, "IT WILL NOT HAPPEN" but if it ever came as a chance, then Pembrokeshire will benifit as a whole, the towns around the Haven will flourish. I honestly am stunned with some of the replies on this article. Get it in your heads, The Milford Haven Waterway is Industrial and once a Military Garrison. If the big Industry left, Pembs would be DEAD!! full of Coffin dodgers, All young people would be on the dole, and we would be ruled by people who would rather turn buildings into Residentual Care Homes, than improving the prospects of our children. Most of us here, have seen our once thriving towns die. I dont want to watch all prospects die with them!"

Milford Haven 'would welcome nuclear submarines'

Milford Haven 'would more than welcome' nuclear-armed Trident submarines, First Minister Carwyn Jones has claimed.

During First Minister's Questions on Tuesday Mr Jones was asked about potential investment in Welsh ports.

Mr Jones responded by saying that he had noticed that the Scottish Government no longer wished to have the UK's nuclear deterrent housed at the Faslane naval base on the River Clyde.

He added: "There will be more than a welcome for that fleet and those jobs in Milford Haven."

The issue of where the Trident fleet would be based should Scotland become independent is one of the main issues being discussed in the run-up to the independence vote in 2014.

Milford Haven has previously been looked at as a potential base but it is widely believed that the large industrial developments around the haven would rule out the move.

The haven is already home to two oil refineries, two LNG facilities, a large tank storage site and a power station due to come online shortly.

Plaid Cymru AM Simon Thomas whose region includes Milford Haven said Mr Jones "clearly has no grasp on reality if he believes that the people of Wales want nuclear weapons stored in Milford Haven".

He added: "Pembrokeshire would lose far more jobs than would be created because of the risks involved of having nuclear submarines. There are a number of oil refineries in the area which would have to be scaled down. What would the impact be on tourism if nuclear warheads were mixing with the seals of Pembrokeshire?"

Mr Thomas pointed out that Milford Haven had been considered for the Polaris submarines in 1963 and had been rejected even then because of its energy developments.

Earlier this year a Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) report also ruled out Milford Haven as a potential base for the Trident fleet because of the industrial sites based around the waterway.

What are your thoughts? Should Milford Haven be considered as a base for the UK's nuclear deterrent? Leave your comments below.
