Milford Haven 'would welcome nuclear submarines'
12:09pm Wednesday 20th June 2012 in Milford Haven
Milford Haven 'would more than welcome' nuclear-armed Trident submarines, First Minister Carwyn Jones has claimed.
During First Minister's Questions on Tuesday Mr Jones was asked about potential investment in Welsh ports.
Mr Jones responded by saying that he had noticed that the Scottish Government no longer wished to have the UK's nuclear deterrent housed at the Faslane naval base on the River Clyde.
He added: "There will be more than a welcome for that fleet and those jobs in Milford Haven."
The issue of where the Trident fleet would be based should Scotland become independent is one of the main issues being discussed in the run-up to the independence vote in 2014.
Milford Haven has previously been looked at as a potential base but it is widely believed that the large industrial developments around the haven would rule out the move.
The haven is already home to two oil refineries, two LNG facilities, a large tank storage site and a power station due to come online shortly.
Plaid Cymru AM Simon Thomas whose region includes Milford Haven said Mr Jones "clearly has no grasp on reality if he believes that the people of Wales want nuclear weapons stored in Milford Haven".
He added: "Pembrokeshire would lose far more jobs than would be created because of the risks involved of having nuclear submarines. There are a number of oil refineries in the area which would have to be scaled down. What would the impact be on tourism if nuclear warheads were mixing with the seals of Pembrokeshire?"
Mr Thomas pointed out that Milford Haven had been considered for the Polaris submarines in 1963 and had been rejected even then because of its energy developments.
Earlier this year a Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) report also ruled out Milford Haven as a potential base for the Trident fleet because of the industrial sites based around the waterway.
What are your thoughts? Should Milford Haven be considered as a base for the UK's nuclear deterrent? Leave your comments below.

It would be interesting, perhaps there should be a Vote by the very people it would involve. Then have it broken down into age groups, It would be obvious that the young would welcome it, the older generation would not want it.
But then lets be realistic, its not going to happen is it! Scotland can bleat all they want, when it comes down to it, they wont let it go, but personally, i would like to see it come down, seeing as the Dockyard was stripped for the ships and jobs up to the very place the Subs are in now!

Yes, they provide jobs - but so does tourism. And tourism is affected by the dirty monstrosities that loom over and across the waterway.
A few years ago, I brought my girlfriend to visit Pembrokeshire (she's from Dorset) and the first thing she commented on as we crossed the Cleddau Bridge was "I thought all this was National Park? It looks like that Port Talbot place we just drove through". I had to concur.

And when they start finding highly toxic radioactive particles on the beaches will you want to walk your dog along Gellyswick or take your kids to play on Milford Beach? Get real, dirty weapons are for dirty wars. Milford Haven is a place of natural beauty, we should be exploiting that rather than trashing it further with more hazardous industry. And on the point of jobs- fat lot of good the oil/gas industry is for Milford these days, the place is more and more depressing every week Charles St. is a disgrace. I can see the tourist brochures now " Come to Milford, but don't go near the beaches and stay away from the restricted areas and you can see the National Park between the smoke stacks and the submarine docks". Carwyn says it's good? Then Carwyn can have the bloody things.

To launch a nuclear weapon, you need the top secret launch codes. Plus there are ultra-stringent checks, complex ignition systems etc. etc.
If you're worried about being vaporised by a huge, devastating explosion - then move away from the refineries. They're far more likely to obliterate you.

Fact is as one comment above said, there'd be more chance on LNG being attacked by terrorists than a Nuclear Sub exploding or 'leaking' Nuclear contaminents into Pembrokeshire's waters.
In fact, the Haven would be an altogether safer place due to the extra security that a Nuclear Base would bring.
On to of that, think of all the extra tourists that would come to the County just for a glimpse of a Vanguard Submarine!
I for one, along with everyone I have spoken to are more than happy with the idea.
One last thing - the Haven has already been surveyed by the MOD as a possible base. I have it on extremely good grounds that the place is perfect.

In 1607 a tidal flood struck the South Wales and River Severn coastal areas. The event is recorded on plaques in a number of churches, including those in Monmouthshire at Goldcliff, St Brides, Redwick and Peterstone. The idea that the 1607 flood was due to a tsunami was first put forward by us in a scientific paper published in 2002 in the journal Archaeology in the Severn Estuary. A number of historical documents exist that describe the event and its aftermath. An area from Barnstaple in North Devon, up the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary to Gloucester, then along the South Wales coast around to Cardigan was affected, some 570 km of coastline.
The coastal population was devastated with at least 2,000 fatalities. Luckily they had no Nuclear Power stations on the Severn Estuary in 1607, unlike we have today, “approx 20 miles across the Severn from Barry in South Wales”.
I am sure lightning wont strike twice. Will it?

Yes, they provide jobs - but so does tourism. And tourism is affected by the dirty monstrosities that loom over and across the waterway.
A few years ago, I brought my girlfriend to visit Pembrokeshire (she's from Dorset) and the first thing she commented on as we crossed the Cleddau Bridge was "I thought all this was National Park? It looks like that Port Talbot place we just drove through". I had to concur.
The tourist industry will bring more jobs and investment to the county than a handful of jobs at a nuclear sub base. Also consider that most new jobs will come from out of county, how many nuclear sub engineers live in milford haven?
But we can argue until blue in the face, It WILL NOT happen.

Nuclear facilities are that safe, they cannot get commercial insurance to cover an accident. We the tax payer have to foot this bill, along with all decommissioning costs.
So called cheap Nuclear Power, will cost the earth in the end.
If nuclear was the only way to supply power to us energy hungry earthlings so be it,
unless of course you can also tell me how I go about producing clean, ethical power to enable me to post on this here forum.

Nikola Tesla was a genius that could harness natural energy from the Earth. Because this energy could not be metered and everyone could use it for free. He was ostracised by his corporate employers and ended up dying penniless, with all of his work being confiscated by the American government.

We can't live in the past but address the future. Charles Street is constantly being referred to as 'dying' be realistic, its dead, move on, it cannot ever be revived despite some deluded views

A Nuclear accident is unforgiving, ask the Japanese.
"Japan is Dying" and radioactive contamination is spreading around the globe in the oceans and atmosphere.
The Welsh Assembly should be ensuring that "Wales is nuclear free"
And if we lived in an earthquake zone like the Japanese do then perhaps I would be worried, but I can't recall the last tsunami in Milford!

Yes many jobs for this base would come out of county.
What is wrong with developing other jobs in the area? Ok what if it was proposed to have a nuclear waste depot in pembs? Or maybe a lap dancing club? These would create jobs yes?

Well, at least 80% of your parks have to close because thats the law, only a few stay open through the year, but those are Resident parks. Get real bud, this isn't a waste dump, its a highly protected Military base. I will say it again, "IT WILL NOT HAPPEN" but if it ever came as a chance, then Pembrokeshire will benifit as a whole, the towns around the Haven will flourish. I honestly am stunned with some of the replies on this article. Get it in your heads, The Milford Haven Waterway is Industrial and once a Military Garrison. If the big Industry left, Pembs would be DEAD!! full of Coffin dodgers, All young people would be on the dole, and we would be ruled by people who would rather turn buildings into Residentual Care Homes, than improving the prospects of our children. Most of us here, have seen our once thriving towns die. I dont want to watch all prospects die with them!

But I honestly believe that there is just way too much scaremongering spin and ignorance attached to radioactivity and if people took the time to learn the science and not the quackery then they would realise that it is not the devil incarnate. Pembrokeshire needs jobs...not at any cost, but this isn't at any cost, it is a known, well researched regulated industry.
Unemployment is no joyride, I have tasted it too many times over the last 5 decades. Living in beautiful Pembrokeshire softened the blow for me. I was skint but I would rather be skint here, than in a city like Cardiff, London etc. Something always turned up. Like many others I had to leave my family and have worked all over the world. I have seen many places and you know, there is nowhere I would rather be than Pembrokeshire. We need jobs in Pembrokeshire yes, but are they to be at any cost.
I hope not.

This visit by these poor sick children, is a direct result of a regulated Nuclear industry accident.
This should be a warning of welcoming Nuclear Power to Pembrokeshire.
Every Nuclear powered Submarine, has a Nuclear Reactor on board. All the safety regulations in the world, cannot protect our children from Human error. : (

The UN's World Health Organisation and the International Atomic Energy Agency claim that only 56 people have died as a direct result of the radiation released at Chernobyl and that about 4,000 will die from it eventually.
They also say that only a few children have died of cancers since the accident and, that most of the illnesses usually linked to Chernobyl are due to psychological distress, radiophobia or poverty and unhealthy living.
But other reputable scientists researching the most radiation-contaminat
ed areas of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine are not convinced. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, another UN agency, predicts 16,000 deaths from Chernobyl; an assessment by the Russian academy of sciences says there have been 60,000 deaths so far in Russia and an estimated 140,000 in Ukraine and Belarus.
Meanwhile, the Belarus national academy of sciences estimates 93,000 deaths so far and 270,000 cancers, and the Ukrainian national commission for radiation protection calculates 500,000 deaths so far.

report places the total confirmed deaths from radiation at 64 as of 2008. The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests it could reach 4,000 civilian deaths, a figure which does not include military clean-up worker casualties. A 2006 report predicted 30,000 to 60,000 cancer deaths as a result of Chernobyl fallout. A Greenpeace report puts this figure at 200,000 or more. A Russian publication, Chernobyl, concludes that 985,000 premature cancer deaths occurred worldwide between 1986 and 2004 as a result of radioactive contamination from Chernobyl.
