Electric car charging points rolled out in Haverfordwest

Charging points for electric cars have been installed in Haverfordwest’s multi storey car park and the car park in County Hall.

Drivers will be able to purchase a £5 swipe card from County Hall and use this to access the points and charge up their cars for free.

Cllr Rob Lewis, cabinet spokesman for highways and planning, told full council how the Welsh Government funded points were installed last week and will be launched properly at the end of the month.

Cllr Lewis said that the charging points would be in place for a trial period which would assess take up and demand.

He said that there was a possibility of asking the Welsh Government to expand the scheme throughout the county if take up was high.

I understand that about 2200 electric cars have been sold in the UK since 2006 and 2500 charging points have been installed. The Government give a £5,000 grant towards the purchase of an electric car but you still have to find another £25,000 which has put most people off buying one. I suppose the more that are sold the cheaper they'll become but take up at present remains slow and the very expensive batteries have to be changed every 5 years or so. I think the average cost of a new diesel/petrol car may be less than the cost of the replacement batteries in an electric car!
Assuming an even spread across the UK population, there could be about 4 or 5 electric cars in Pembrokeshire.
