NATURAL Resources Wales is asking local people to be vigilant after another illegal fishing net was discovered on the River Teifi.

The organisation received reports of a 75 foot long net across the river in the Cardigan Town area last Wednesday evening, July 31.

The net was removed by Natural Resources Wales officers, but the offenders have yet to be identified.

It is an offence to set nets on the river as there is a significant risk of catching migratory salmon, sea trout and bass.

A spokesperson from Natural Resources Wales said: “We’ve had reports from local fishermen of record numbers of bass in the Teifi estuary this summer, so it could be groups of people trying to cash in on the bumper stocks.

“But the laws are there for a purpose, to make sure that fish stocks in the river remain sustainable, so there’s no excuse for illegal netting.

“We’re asking local people to be alert for any suspicious activity on the river and to report any concerns to our hotline on 0800 80 70 60.”

Last month Natural Resources Wales (previously the Environment Agency) removed a large illegal net from the beach at Poppit sands, which was threatening both wildlife and users of the beach.

Officers have legal powers to apprehend individuals and seize any illegal equipment connected to the offences.
