AN annual book festival which celebrates the quality and diversity of writing in Wales takes place next month.

The 2014 PENfro Book Festival will run from Friday, September 12 to Sunday, September 14 in the beautiful setting of Rhosygilwen, featuring a variety of events and some big names in the literary world.

On the Friday evening there will be a special screening of 'La Casa di Dio' - the story of a little Catholic church in Wales built by Italian prisoners of war who were imprisoned at Henllan, near Newcastle Emlyn from 1943 to 1946.

The director of the film, Owain Ll?r, will introduce the screening which celebrates 70 years since the church was reopened in September 1944. Afterwards there will be a bilingual question and answer session.

On Saturday there will be a choice of two hour workshops for writers, all led by professionals who have made a name for themselves in their field.

They include: The Poetry Garden: with Maggie Harris, Character and plot - getting the balance right: with Nina Milton, Writing Radio Drama: with Lucy Gough, Fiction - A Sense of Place: with Brian John , Getting Published: with Reader/Talent Scout , David Llewelyn and How to Write My Memoir - with Barbara Large.

Sunday is festival day. There are around a dozen different events covering new fiction, poetry, biography, photography as well as events aimed at children.

They include a journey into some of the enchanting folktales of the world, handpicked by local children to be performed by local storyteller Beth Guiver. Dan Anthony and Huw Aaron will run a fun workshop getting kids to think of characters and drawing them and creating stories based on them, and author Anwen Francis, with her pony Siani will host a Welsh language story session based on the popular Siani’r Shetland books.
