THE new mayor of Newport has promised to do his very best to serve and support the people of the town.

Andrew Benham was sworn in at a meeting of the Court Leet held at the Llwyngwair Manor last month.

The ancient ceremony was witnessed by visiting mayors and dignitaries from Cardigan, Haverfordwest and Tenby and more than 130 friends and supporters.

Two new Burgesses Robin Watson and Tony Williams were also sworn in at the meeting.

Mr Benham moved to Newport with his wife Laura in 1996, where they brought up their two sons Laurence and William.

He thanked the outgoing Mayor, Peter Smith, and made special mention of his magnificent fundraising efforts for local causes during his term of office.

He said: “Being made mayor of Newport is a great honour for me and I would like to thank you for considering me worthy of this position.

“I will continue to carry out the work that Alderman Peter Smith and his predecessors have achieved, and emulate their support of the local hostelries.”

He added: “I hope I can give back some of the good that has been given to me and my family.”

The Mayor of Newport is unlike other Mayor, in that it is not a council held position. Newport is in the Barony of Cemaes and the Mayor is appointed by the Lord Marcher, Aldermen and Burgesses, whom form part of the Court Leet, a tradition that dates back nearly 800 years.
