CILGERRAN honey producer Lorien Furbear is embarking on a gruelling charity cycling challenge through central America.

Lorien responded to an appeal by leading infertility expert Professor Robert Winston, and will join a tough, women-only cycling challenge in Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua to raise funds to improve the health of women and babies.

Hundreds of women from across the UK have already helped Professor Winston raise nearly £2.7million for Genesis Research Trust’s Women for Women fund by taking part in cycling challenges around the world.

Lorien, aged 33, will cycle approximately 450km across three Central American counties.

She needs to raise a minimum of £3,300 to fund groundbreaking medical research work at a major research institute at Hammersmith Hospital in London and is asking local people to help her reach her target.

Yvonne Konieczna of Genesis Research Trust said: “Funds raised by Lorien will support women scientists and clinicians to specialise in research affecting women and their babiesempowering more women to lead in this field.

“They will work in the research centre to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a range of devastating conditions which cause miscarriage, genetic diseases, infertility and cancer.

“With nearly 250 babies dying every week in the UK from complications during pregnancy, our work has never been so essential for women and babies nationwide.”

Lorien is grateful to New Image Bicycles, Cardigan, for their support and sponsorship and would like to encourage everyone to get on a bike this summer.

She said: “It’s a great way to enjoy our beautiful countryside, sneak up on nature, spend time with the family and get fit.”

A fundraising Gangsters and Molls fancy dress barbecue, will be held at the Cardiff Arms on June 18th at 4pm, featuring Wozza, Chrisy B and Dan on the decks.
