THE Pembroke Dock Branch of the Royal Engineers Association has celebrated a major milestone.

March 16 marked 100 years since the branch was formed. The occasion was marked by a centenary dinner held at the Lamphey Court Hotel on Friday, March 14.

Chairman Major (Retd) Brian Henderson read a letter of congratulations from Her Majesty The Queen.

“We celebrated 100 years – that’s an extremely rare thing within the wider association,” said Mr Henderson. “There are only six branches across the UK in the same position of unbroken service.

“We didn’t think we would make it because of the falling membership in the branch but we did make it. It was a very proud moment for us.”

The 12-member branch supports the Sapper Scholarship which provides financial support to prospective undergraduate engineering students at Pembroke School. In 2012 it donated £50,000 to the scholarship fund.

Nearly £50,000 was donated to other charities and organisations that year, including £10,000 each to Withybush Hospital and South Pembrokeshire Hospital, £6,000 to Paul Sartori and £10,000 to Wales Air Ambulance.
