A PEMBROKE Dock man – killed in action on June 23 1944 – was remembered by members of his family recently.

Sgt Ernest George Lewis - grandson of W L Silcox, founder of the bus company - was shot down over Belloy-sur-Oise, France and buried along with his fellow crew members.

Ernest ‘s second cousin, Susan Turnbull of Manorbier, attended a day of 70th anniversary commemorations in the village of Belloy with her husband Bryan and six other members of her family.

It was less than three years ago that Susan discovered that Sgt Lewis was buried in France and not lost over France as previously thought by the family.

Susan has been researching this and been in contact with the mayor of the village, providing him with a file about Sgt Lewis which was proudly displayed in the Mairie along with files about other crew members killed in the crash.

Susan’s email address is brysu@btinternet.com and she would be delighted to receive any new information about Ernest.
