A NEW book and DVD trace the history of Pembroke and Monkton through the individual stories of local people.

‘Through My Eyes, a Community History of Pembroke and Monkton’ was launched at Pembroke Town Hall on Saturday (October 4).

It traces the history of the community through the personal stories of 45 people in community.

Opening the evening, guest of honour Angela Burns AM complimented the Society on producing a unique and fascinating book.

Society chairman Linda Asman said the book was "a shining example of volunteering, of people giving up so much of their time to produce something of value to the community".

She thanked Mrs Burns for her kind words, all those who helped bring it about: in particular the Society Project Committee, Matt White for producing the DVD, Keith Johnson for the editing the book and above all the many members of the community who gave up so much of their time to write and narrate their stories.

Mrs Asman said she believed that the overwhelming initial response - which saw 170 books sold in the first two hours - showed the huge local interest in the project.

"I hope in this project we have at least done something to capture that sense of place which is Pembroke, to share the memories as well as to preserve them for posterity," she said.

Through My Eyes is now available to buy from Pembroke Museum.

The book, which was published with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, costs £12 with a £2 discount for members, and includes a free DVD.

All proceeds from sales will be invested in future projects of the Society and in Pembroke Museum which it supports.
