A PEMBROKE Rotary Club member is taking part in an epic motorcycle ride of nearly 7,500 miles to Siberia, helping children in Russian orphanages.

Patryk Borajkiewicz, who owns Pembroke Dock-based PBS Construction & Design Ltd, starts the 5,100 mile international Katyn Rally on August 22, riding from Warsaw to Siberia and back by September 13.

To even start the motorcycle rally, Warsaw-born Patryk, of Glenview Avenue, Llanion is faced with a 2,500 ride to Warsaw aboard his Harley Davidson V-rod motorcycle, leaving from Pembroke Castle on August 15.

The event, now in its 15th year, raises money for orphans and commemorates all those Polish people who have died in wars or fighting against communism and fascism.

The route to the border of Kazakhstan follows part of the route of the Polish exiles sent to Siberia by Stalin’s regime during World War II. It includes a visit to the site of the infamous Katyn massacre of Polish victims of the Soviet occupation.

The riders will be giving out clothing and toys to various orphanages along the way.

Pembroke Rotarians have donated £200 towards to the cause, and are planning further fundraising.

Funds are also being raised through the FundRazr charity donation website on Patryk’s Pembroke to Katyn Rally Facebook page, with every penny going directly to the children.

Patrick said: “This will be an incredible adventure but is has a serious point. The ride aims to remember all those Polish people who have died fighting persecution over many years as well as raise money for a good cause. I think I’m probably the only person from Pembrokeshire and possibly even the UK to be taking part, which is a great honour.

“I understand that people face tough financial times and they may ask themselves why they should make a donation to Polish orphans, but these children really have nothing and it's heartbreaking.”
