SATURDAY’S annual river rally in Pembroke promises to be a spectacular event with many attractions, an even both local town mayors abseiling down the castle keep in aid of charity.

The August 8 river rally sees Mayor of Pembroke Cllr Pauline Waters and her consort exercise her right to navigate the Pembroke River.

Cllr Waters will be accompanied by the Pembroke Dock Mayor Cllr Peter Kraus.

The town council, in conjunction with the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society, will be hosting the event from 11am, with a variety of stalls and activities.

A flotilla of small boats will be setting out from Hobbs Point and navigating the Pembroke River to the Castle Pond to keep the ancient right to navigate the Pembroke River open.

It is expected to arrive in the Castle Pond, Pembroke at 11.48am.

This year sees a charity abseil on the outside walls of the castle by the dungeon area at 1.30pm to raise funds for the Welsh Guards Charity.

The Regiment is celebrating its centenary this year, and Pembroke has a close relationship with it since the Freedom of the town was conferred upon 1st Battalion Welsh Guards on March 15, 2006.

Earlier this year, the town council agreed to support a proposal by Cllr Aden Brinn to purchase a gift for the regiment, a rose bowl, which will be presented in commemoration of the event.

The team of abseillers will include the Mayor of Pembroke, Cllr Pauline Waters and the Mayor of Pembroke Dock Cllr Peter Kraus.

The rally regularly attracts a flotilla of boats, and last year more than 30 came to the Castle Pond.

There’s plenty more the keep visitors interested, with face painting, a bouncy castle, stalls, a barbecue, Minions, Daleks, and balloon modelling amongst the many attractions at the event, which runs to 3pm.
