PEMBROKE Town council has objected to a major housing development proposed for the outskirts of the town, due to “grave concerns” about safety which could lead to deaths on a nearby road.

The reserved matters application for 100 homes and vehicular access has been submitted by house builder Persimmon Homes as the second phase of development on land East of Bush Hill and Southwest of Buttermilk Lane.

One of the main concerns raised by councillors was pedestrian access onto Bush Hill.

Speaking at the last meeting of the town council, Councillor Wyn Jenkins said: “I honestly think we should have a very strong protest about anything going out to Bush Hill; there’s going to be another two accesses to stop traffic on that road. I think we should very strongly object.”

Councillor Jan Gigler said: “It’s dangerous to cross there as it is, I cannot concede two crossings unless there were bridges; I think it’s completely ridiculous to having anyone crossing that road.”

Councillor Linda Asman, who later raised concerns in a letter to county planners, said it was not just road safety that was a concern, describing the soakaway plans for water drainage as “inadequate”.

“We’ve got 100 homes, it’s a huge worry for people with flooding and it will go into Castle Pond.

“Their own report is saying this system isn’t adequate.”

Deputy Mayor Dennis Evans said: “I think we’re all agreed that this is totally and utterly unsafe; there’s lots of ground for objecting to it.”

Members agreed to object, stating: “The council has very grave concerns about the proposed access directly onto Bush Hill and that it is an ill-conceived idea and potentially extremely dangerous with possible fatal consequences. Bush Hill is an extremely busy road and children and elderly crossing that road will be put in great danger.”
