PEMBROKE Town Council is to launch a petition calling for a roundabout at the Fingerpost accident blackspot on the A477.

The town council has previously highlighted dangers at the crossing, and has called for a roundabout.

At its July meeting, Councillor Wyn Jenkins called for a roundabout, adding that recent roadworks had done little to alleviate safety concerns.

Less than 24 hours later, a woman was removed on a spinal board from a two vehicle crash at the Fingerpost, and two people were taken to Withybush hospital.

At last Thursday’s August meeting, town councillors heard a letter sent to the Trunk Road Agency had been passed on to the Welsh Assembly Government, with a response received from Edwina Hart AM.

“No significant issues” had been raised about Fingerpost safety, and there was no plan for a roundabout.

Clerk Suzie Thomas said she had discussed the response with Mayor Pauline Waters, and it was decided a petition was the way forward.

Cllr Waters called on councillors knock on doors in their own wards to gain support for the petition.

“It’s most important, we’ve got to work together and get the signatures.”

Councillor Clive Collins said: “The junction has been fought before it was even constructed; it’s the busiest junction in the county; that’s the busiest piece of road in the county, including the A40.”

Cllr Jenkins said: “Since this came up in the last meeting there’s been three or four accidents; I was virtually involved on one two days afterwards, a three car pile-up.”

He said concerns had also been raised about poor visibility at the junction for tanker drivers.

Councillor Rose Blackburn said the nearby dip opposite the WP Lewis showroom was another cause for concern, adding the petition also needed to record any near misses at the junction.
