PEMBROKE Dock’s Pater Hall marked the 70th anniversary of the ending of World War 2, the victory over Japan, VJ Day, with two events last weekend.

The August 15, 1945 event was commemorated 70 years on at the Lewis Street hall with a night of Big Band and Swing music on Friday evening, August 14, with a Pembroke Dock WI breakfast event the following morning.

The hall echoed to the favourite anthems of the era, such as In The Mood, Boogie Blues, Route 66, Summertime and Pennsylvania 65000, performed by Cardiff-based eight-piece Kittie’s Little Big Band.

Saturday morning saw the chance to recuperate with a good old fry-up and cup of char, with brunch available right up ‘til lunchtime.

Pembroke Dock WI President Pam George said: “We were celebrating 100 years of the WI, and as it was VJ Day we just wanted to do something.

“It went off fairly well, we were busy, really hectic, we weren’t overrun with people but we must have had a good 60-plus; we put on some 40s music and we had the flags up, we made everybody welcome.

“They’re a brilliant bunch of ladies, I couldn’t ask for better, you only have to ask and they are there, baking cakes like mad.

“We’re a new club really, we’ve only been going just over five years; Pembroke Dock used to have a thriving WI but then it folded, I was asked just over five years would I help them to re-form and now we’ve got 24 members.

“Everybody’s full of life, they get involved with all sorts, they’re a brilliant bunch of ladies.”

Anyone interested in joining the WI can contact Pam George on 01646 681 262, or turn up at the group’s monthly meetings at the Pater Hall, held on the second Thursday from 7-9pm.
