A GROUP of pupils at Pembroke’s Golden Grove School have been getting to grips with the wonders of the internal combustion engine during an eight week engineering-based Greenlinks activity at their facility adjacent to Pembroke School.

The pupils worked on rebuilding several stripped down go-karts. The group worked in teams to complete the task. They developed an understanding of some of the engineering needed to finish the task.

Group discussions with Greenlinks staff and staff from Golden Grove School were lively and enquiring. All three karts were completed with minimal practical assistance from the Greenlinks staff to whom the school would like to express their gratitude.

The successful build sessions will lead to driving sessions at a local karting centre.

In other school news, young explorers have been busy in the school grounds recently.

Work has been linked to history, science and maths where they have been using a metal detector to explore the school grounds. The C-Scope metal detector has been very kindly donated to the school by C-Scope UK.

Getting the pupils used to and using the equipment was undertaken in the long jump pit with a number of ‘finds’ being put there.

The pupils soon moved on to other areas from where they recovered some recently lost money, this was put in to a charity box. Further searches of the school grounds are planned. The school is indebted to Martin Bass from C-Scope for the equipment.

Head teacher Andy Williams said: “It is fantastic to see our pupils engaging in a diversified range of activities aimed at encouraging learning.”
