PEOPLE with passion for a local project was the description given to the 20 or so volunteers who turned out at Carew Cheriton Museum and Control Tower by Carmarthen West & South Pembrokeshire Assembly Member Angela Burns.

Mrs Burns was visiting the airfield with Secretary of State Stephen Crabb to hear from the volunteers, headed by John Brock MBE, of the plans to continue the development of the Airfield.

Members of Carew Historical Society and other interested people formed the Carew Cheriton Control Tower Group in the spring of 2000.

Since then the group have restored the Control Tower, rebuilt the Stanton air-raid shelter and developed a museum with a huge array of exhibits including military uniforms, RAF maps, radio equipment, ration books, Bren gun, an Enfield rifle, and many other artefacts.

Mrs Burns said: “It was lovely to meet John, Keith Hamer, Rob Lewis, Tony Ratcliffe and all the other volunteers again. They have worked so hard to develop a wonderful experience for young and old alike. It is truly a wonderful memorial to those who served on the airfield during the two world wars.

“It’s a fascinating tourism attraction and an exciting and educational trip for the many children who visit with their schools. Their plans for the future are ambitious and will put Carew Airfield very firmly on the military history tour map. Wales needs a military museum and there is no reason why this band of passionate volunteers can’t make it happen here in Pembrokeshire.”
