A YOUNGSTER from Lamphey, raising funds to help provide wells in Africa, has received a £100 boost from Pembroke and Pembroke Dock Lions.

Nine-year-old Habeba Maziane, of Cleggars Park, Lamphey, who is half-Welsh-half Moroccan, has been raising funds for the Walk in her Shoes charity.

Walk in Her Shoes highlights the issue that, in the world’s poorest countries, women and girls have to spend their days walking for water. This daily trek prevents them from going to work or school, and means they can’t fulfil their potential

Habeba recently wrote to the Lions: “I am taking part in a walk to raise money to build wells in villages in Africa. At the moment too many girls of my age have to walk to collect water every day and so don’t have time to go to school.

“I do hope you can help me to help the poor girls.”

Habeba, who has already raised funds through donations from family and friends, wrote a letter of thanks to the Lions after receiving her donation.

“I am writing to thank you for the wonderful cheque you gave me. I had raised £100 from my family and friends, so you have doubled that amount; I think the money will make a real difference to the girls’ lives.”
