MANY hands made light work at Pembroke’s Golden Grove School recently, when more than 150 pupils, parents, staff and other helpers came together with Greenlinks CIC and Arcswood CIC for a Community Day.

The focus of the event was a major overhaul and development of the school garden and a border in the rear courtyard.

The event was supported by Pembroke and Pembroke Dock Communities First.

With large quantities of top soil and chippings to move it was all hands with barrows and shovels to move it to create a path and to fill four raised beds.

The enthusiastic group of adults were helped by pupils filling small buckets and transporting them to the paths and beds. Another team set about clearing the redundant border and transforming it with varieties of plants for pollinators, such as bees and butterflies.

A bouncy castle was made good use of to keep children entertained while mums and dads toiled away.

Miss Denton and Miss Williams oversaw the creation of a large ‘Our Garden’ sign, signed by the children.

After three hours of work it was time to stand back and admire the work while enjoying a burger from the barbecue.

The results, a fantastic garden area for the school to enjoy, a tremendous learning resource and a source of home (school) grown food.

Head Teacher Andy Williams said: “I am grateful to everyone who attended the Community Day. This was a tremendous effort and I am extremely pleased with the results.

“Our garden area has been transformed in to a valuable resource for the school.

“Thank you to all the families who took part, thank you to Communities First, Greenlinks and Arcswood. Also a very special thanks to the pupils who came along to create their garden.”
