YOUNGSTERS at Pembroke’s Golden Grove School went orange recently for a special day raising awareness of a potentially very serious allergy condition.

Pupils and staff wore orange wigs and orange clothes in support of Anaphylaxis Awareness Day.

Anaphylaxis is an extreme and severe allergic reaction. The whole body is affected, often within minutes of exposure to the substance which causes the allergic reaction (allergen) but sometimes after hours.

Common causes include foods such as peanuts, tree nuts such as almonds, walnuts, cashews, and Brazil nuts; sesame, fish, shellfish, dairy products and eggs.

The school is very aware of the serious nature of anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock, particular attention is given where needed and whole school training is provided on how to deal with incidents.

Head Teacher Andy Williams said: “Supporting the awareness raising day was important for the school, we had a large number of pupils and staff wearing orange wigs and clothes.”

As to be expected it was Orange Class that had the highest number of pupils dressed up.

Class Teacher Miss Adams said: “The pupils enjoyed taking part and appreciated learning about the condition. I am grateful to the parents for their enthusiastic support.”
