THE regular monthly meeting of St David's and Dewisland Historical Society was held in City Hall on February 10.

It began with Dr George Middleton showing members 65 copper coins which had been discovered when a hedge at Oriel y Parc collapsed during the recent storms.

They form a collection issued from the reign of Queen Victoria up to Queen Elizabeth II. It is not known why they were buried in the hedge.

The speakers for the evening were Eifion and Amanda Griffiths, who together covered 100 years of Melin Tregwynt.

They delved into the history of three generations, starting when Eifion's grandfather bought the mill back in 1912. The building was originally a fulling mill on the Dyffryn estate and dated back further to the early 19th century.

The talk was illustrated by numerous pictures of family, staff and buildings, past and present, including the original mill wheel.

Pictures were also shown of various cloths woven at the mill, including the tapestry designs so popular in the middle of the last century. The talk was brought right up-to-date with accounts of specially woven materials for the centenary of the mill, and mentions of the international clientele now established.

The society will be holding an exhibition in the Memorial Hall over the weekend of March 1. This will look at St David's in the years leading up to World War I. The next meeting will be on March 10.
