IT was a case of hair today and gone tomorrow for a Solva woman, who certainly marked her 50th birthday in style.

Catherin Griffiths made a promise to her three children, Harry, James and Maisie on her 40th birthday that she would shave off all of her hair when she turned 50.

She said they have never let me forget and were counting down the days with great joy until my birthday on January 29.

Catherin shed her locks at The Harbour Inn, raising more than £700 for charity. The money will be shared equally between ward 10 at Withybush Hospital and the Paul Sartori Foundation.

She said both causes are close to her heart.

“I lost my dad, Ieuan Ellis Griffiths, to cancer 12 years ago. He passed away on ward 10. At the time I was six months pregnant and the care they showed my dad was nothing short of amazing. For that I will always be grateful.

“Over the past 12 years I have lost too many friends and family to cancer, and everyone who has had any contact with ward 10 and the angels who work there will know where I'm coming from.

“My mum, Margery Eva Griffiths died from cancer in 1973 when I was only nine. She knew the late Father Paul Sartori and he had a hand in my adoption in 1964.”

Speaking after the ‘shave off’, Catherin said she liked her new look.

“It's quite liberating in a weird kind of way. It's certainly a lot easier getting ready for work in the morning,” she said.

Catherin would like to thank Joe Griffin, Sarah Edwards, Mic Rushen, Maria Wright, Sue Jenkins, Linnie Frith, Heidi Holland, Gwyn Price, Victoria Jones, Cilla Bramley and her choir, the soldiers of 14th Signals, and her children and grandson Alfie, who were the reason she did it.
