A COUPLE has begun a commemorative caravan journey to north Pembrokeshire in memory of their late son.

Roy and Jacky Fredrickson are travelling from Lowestoft to St Davids. They are doing it, with the support of the Caravan Club and Brain Tumour Charity, in order to fulfil an unachieved ambition held by their late son, Jon Fredrickson.

Wanting to travel, but not being able to travel abroad, Jon aimed to visit the furthest points of the UK. Sadly he became too unwell to achieve this modest ambition. He did however visit St Davids and loved it, especially the cathedral, St Non’s well and Whitesands.

Jon was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002 at just 16 years-old. He endured a year of aggressive treatment and seemed to be well for almost six years. Devastatingly, the tumour returned and by 2012 he had lost his 10 year battle.

Jacky said: “Jon fought so bravely throughout repeated surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

“Last year we set up the ‘Jon Fredrickson Fund’ with The Brain Tumour Charity, to coincide with the first anniversary of Jon’s death. We chose to support the work of this charity in order to further Brain Tumour Research.”

More than 9,000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year and brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40, yet less than 2% of cancer research funding goes on brain tumours in the UK. This year The Brain Tumour Charity is committed to changing this and will invest £2.5 million in world-class, pioneering research across the UK.
