PLANS to install a tidal energy device at Ramsey Sound are said to be progressing well.

The company behind the DeltaStream device recently sent out an update to people interested in the proposal. It explains the device is being constructed and assembled at Mustang Marine's shipyard in Pembroke Dock.

A spokesman from Tidal Energy Ltd said: “Mustang Marine has continued work on the DeltaStream device over the past 10 weeks, whilst the company has been in administration. It is considered that fabrication of the DeltaStream turbine has been one of the key factors in keeping the yard operational and preventing closure of the facility.”

The company is on course to begin marine works onsite at Ramsey Sound early this month. The work includes laying of the moorings and cables. The actual prototype will be deployed sometime between June and August.

The DeltaStream device is comprised of three independent 400kW turbines. It has been invented by Pembrokeshire engineer Richard Ayre. He said: “This is a concept we came up with the National Park back in 2002 and it evolved from there to the thing it is today."

It will remain on the sea bed at Ramsey Sound for a 12 month demonstration period, where it is hoped it will generate clean electricity for homes in St Davids.
