CITY councillors have agreed to contribute money to help restore the clocks on St David’s Cathedrals.
A ‘lend a hand’ appeal has been launched by the cathedral to raise the £150,000 needed to restore each of the three clock faces on the cathedral tower, including the Roman numerals and the golden clock hands.
Councillors met on Monday night (June 2) to discuss how much to donate.
Councillor Frank John said: “As a city council we should be seen to make a donation. Everyone looks at the cathedral clock for the time.”
Cllr Chris Taylor said: “It’s the people’s clock and we have been involved with it in the past."
Cllr Shan Williams said she would prefer to see money donated to the development of the City Hall.
After the group’s finance assured councillors they could afford it, councillors voted in favour of donating £1,000 to the clock appeal.
The city council’s donation follows a £37,500 lump sum awarded by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority which has allowed work on the clock to get underway.
