A LARGE group of people who were stationed at RAF Brawdy are planning to meet up at the annual 14 Signal Regiment open day on Saturday, July 26.

Around 60 people from Pembrokeshire and across the UK have confirmed their attendance at RAF Brawdy’s Big Reunion.

Among them is Andy Baldwin Davies who is travelling down from Southampton.

He said: “I was at Brawdy from 1980 to 1983, working in the tower, operations and flight planning.

“I was lucky enough to fly in some of the aircraft which were at Brawdy, including a Sea King and hawk.

Barry Wood is coming from east Essex, having worked as a flight line mechanic on the hunter lines from 1976 to 1978.

He said: “I too was lucky to fly in Brawdy’s aircraft.”

Also in attendance is Kelvin Stapely, who was posted to Brawdy at the beginning of 1976 and stayed until 1979.

He said: “In the last couple of months I have met with two ex-lineys after 35 years; one in Wales and one in London. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting them again and am so looking forward to the reunion.”

The group will be meeting up on the Friday night (July 25), and the following day they will join the annual open day at the Cawdor Barracks, where they will be given a special tour of the base.

Some members of the group will be staying in accommodation on the base, with others camping or staying in nearby bed and breakfasts.

RAF Brawdy was operational between 1944 and 1992 being used by both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy before the site was turned over to the British Army.

The reunion has been organised by Vic Owen and Pete Buckingham, who sadly is unable to attend.

Vic, a former aircraft electrical technician, said: “When I first found out about the existence of the Brawdy Appreciation Society at the beginning of 2014, I immediately joined the group.

“There was already some talk of having a reunion, mainly because there seemed to be a general feeling that at some stage in the future the MOD would relinquish the land.

“I am extremely pleased with the response. We have over 60 members who are definitely attending plus another 40 or so maybes.”
