MEMBERS of St Davids Historical Society were delighted to be invited to visit Penrhiw Priory on September 29.

They were greeted by the manageress Julie Rogers who gave a brief summary of the history of the building, before leading a tour.

She told members that the meadow, which the Retreats Group has leased from the Cathedral, was intended as a local resource and invited them to use it for walking at any time.

Many of the members had known the Priory when it was occupied by nuns and were fascinated to see it in its present incarnation.

They visited the lounge and drawing room, the kitchens and also took a peep into one of the luxurious en-suite bedrooms. Outdoors members enjoyed tea on the warmth of the sun terrace.

Afterwards Mrs Rogers presented the society with a book of photographs and poetry in three volumes entitled “Pebidiog”. This showed photographs by Marcus Oleniuk of North Pembrokeshire with poems by Mererid Hopwood.

The society was grateful to Keith Griffiths for his kind invitation and to Mrs Rogers for her time and hospitality.

The next meeting of the society will be on October 13 in the City Hall when Simon Hancock will talk about the social history Of the First World War.
