DYFED-POWYS Police is calling on all boat owners to join an innovative scheme to keep their vessels safe.
Boatwatch is a new crimefighting measure to target criminals who commit burglaries and thefts within the local ‘sea-faring’ community.
The Porthclais and Solva Neighbourhood Management Teams have launched the scheme to enable boat owners to mark marine equipment and outboards with SMARTWATER – an innovative liquid forensic coding system.
The initiative will help to combat criminals who prey of this community and ensure any stolen items are returned to its owner.
Once applied to valuables such as jewellery, machinery or electrical equipment, the liquid will assign each user with its own DNA-style code and provide property with a forensic link back to the owner.
The solution is virtually impossible to remove and fluoresces brightly under ultraviolet light.
PC Kelly Jones said: “We welcome members of the boating community to come and take advantage of this effective initiative.
“This product will become one of the many powerful tools available to the police and the wider community to stop criminals in their tracks.
As a modern police force, we are prepared to use any new technologies available to assist in our fight against crime.”
