PLANS to replace Tenby VC Infant School and Tenby Junior Community School with an English medium primary school and a Welsh medium primary school were recommended by Pembrokeshire County Council on Monday (December 3rd).

Cabinet member for education and Welsh language Councillor Huw George said: “This is a very exciting and historic opportunity for primary education in the town.

“It will strengthen and develop primary and Welsh medium provision in the area,” Cllr George added.

Under the new proposals, Tenby VC Infants school and Tenby Junior Community School will close on August 31st 2015 and a new Welsh medium school and an English medium school with voluntary controlled status will open on September 1st 2015. Both schools will cater for pupils aged three to 11.

Plans to hold a consultation for the proposals were agreed at a cabinet meeting on July 2nd.

The Welsh medium school will be on the current infant school site and the English medium school will be developed on the current junior school site.

Original proposals to bring in the changes in 2013 have been put back following consultation with staff, parents and governors and to enable the necessary building work and transport issues to be completed in time.
