Tenby's firefighters and lifeboatmen have been showcasing their safety service for Caldey Island to fire authority deputy chair Wynne Evans.

Councillor Evans, of Narberth, who is also deputy chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, recently enjoyed a tour of Tenby's lifeboat and Caldey Island last Tuesday.

The aim of the visit was to learn more about the operational tactical plan which the Mid and West Wales Fire Service has in place on the island.

Councillor Evans walked through the town, accompanied Tenby fire station crew wearing full fire kit, to the town’s lifeboat station, where he was welcomed aboard the Tamar-class lifeboat, the Haydn Miller. He was given a full tour and shown all the equipment, including radar systems, before its launch into the sea, which took him to Caldey Island.

One of Caldey Island’s fire service volunteers, Frank Miller, was there to greet Councillor Evans, before they embarked on a tour in the island’s multi-agency response vehicle. The customised Land Rover is used as a response vehicle for fire, medical and environmental incidents on the island

Councillor Evans said: “It was an exhilarating experience, and made me even prouder of both the Tenby fire crew and the crew of the Tenby lifeboat, and the tremendous work they do.

“I was really impressed to see all the equipment and crews in action and wish to support them in all their good work in the future. We are currently working hard to raise funds for a defibrillator for Caldey’s multi-agency response vehicle, to enhance its emergency response provision.”
