THE 70th anniversary of VJ Day was commemorated in stirring style in Saundersfoot on Sunday.

Around 80 people, including veterans of the Second World War, gathered at Coppet Hall for a parade through the tunnels and along The Strand to the Regency Hall for a service of thanksgiving.

Amongst those taking part was D Day veteran Gordon Prime, who travelled in a 1943 Willys Jeep belonging to fellow Tenby Royal British Legion member Mike Hickling.

Mr Hickling drove the veteran vehicle proudly wearing the medals won by his late father, who was a prisoner of the Japanese.

The procession was led by Tenby Royal British Legion secretary, Graham Phillips, on bagpipes, ahead of 12 standards.

The event was organised by Saundersfoot Community Council to mark the anniversaries of both VE Day and VJ Day, which signified the end of the Second World War with the surrender of Japan.

Amongst those taking part in the parade was the chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Councillor Wynne Evans, who congratulated the organisers on ‘an impressive day‘.

He added: “I was very humbled and honoured to speak to so many veterans after the service.”
