MORE THAN £5,000 has been raised for the Paul Sartori Foundation in memory of a respected Tenby teacher.

Alun Rees of New Hedges - who taught at Greenhill School for 37 years before his retirement - died in October 2014 just three weeks after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

It was 67-year-old Mr Rees’s wish to end his life at home, and this was achieved with the support of the foundation, which is Pembrokeshire’s only hospice at home charity.

His younger daughter, Nic Bowen, has raised the money with the help of her nephew, Max Brewster, by running over 100 miles in various half marathons.

Max, aged 18, was the guest of honour at the recent switch-on of Sheila and Vic Norman’s Christmas lighting display at Kingsmoor Close, Kilgetty, which is also raising money for the Paul Sartori Foundation.

Max is the captain of the Friends of Saundersfoot School (FOSS) running team, which ran the Tenby 10k to raise £849.50 for FOSS and the Paul Sartori Foundation, and as a result, a cheque for £424.75 was also presented to the foundation that evening.

FOSS will use its share of the money raised towards projects around the school.

The FOSS team consisted of parents, past pupils, friends and staff - some of whom had never run a 10k before and others who were Ironmen and women.

Said the Paul Sartori Foundation’s community fundraiser, Toni Dorkings: “We are so grateful to Mr Rees’ family and to Saundersfoot School for their donations.

“It is amazing that people do this kind of thing for us. If it was not for the money raised by the people of Pembrokeshire, we would not be able to provide the service we offer.”
