RUGBY player and rower Dan McDermott will be taking to the road next month to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK in memory of his grandfather

This is the second year that the 25-year-old environmental engineer from Tenby is taking part in Velothon Wales, a 140km closed-road cycling event.

Dan was inspired to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK after seeing his granddad, Terry McDermott, living with dementia.

“I idolised him growing up,” said Dan. “My grandfather was incredibly knowledgeable and was very good with his hands.

“Seeing a loved one with dementia is tough - it’s really scary how quickly someone can fall to pieces. He was like a different person.

“There’s been a lot of progress in dementia research recently, but it often gets less focus than other conditions.

“When I talked to people about my grandfather, I realised how many people have dementia in their families.

“I want to help, and plan to do something stupid for Alzheimer’s Research UK every year!”

Dan will be tackling the Velothon on May 22.
