A VILLAGER’S contribution to his community in East Williamston earned him an MBE last month when he was presented with his medal by the Queen at Windsor Castle.

Community councillor Ian Wilkinson, who is also secretary of East Williamston Community and Hall Association has worked on many projects in the area including the establishment of a community hall, refurbishment of the play area in Broadmoor and a new one in Pentlepoir, and the development of the East Williamston Jubilee Park and Nature Trail, opened by BBC Wales television presenter Iolo Williams in 2007.

Mr Wilkinson was humbled by his inclusion on the 2011 New Year’s Honours List and acknowledged the hard work of a number of villagers in the community who nominated him for the award.

On accepting his MBE, Mr Wilkinson said he was delighted to be given it, not for himself, but for everyone who had been involved in the work carried out at East Williamston.

The Queen spoke to Mr Wilkinson of the honour she felt in awarding people involved in community work and awards were not only for individuals but to all who provided an important service in their communities.

A party was held at the East Williamston Community Hall on April 30th to give Mr Wilkinson and his family a chance to thank everyone who had helped and supported the work done by the community.
