THERE can be few better places to make a sandcastle than on the golden stretch of Tenby’s South Beach.

And now a competition for the best sand structure has chosen the beach as its venue.

The free contest – open to families and friends – is organised by the Welsh Wales branch of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales.

It’s being hosted by Pembrokeshire County Council, whose cabinet member for leisure and tourism, Councillor Rob Lewis, said: “Tenby is the perfect venue for the event, with its golden sands, rich history and outstanding Georgian architecture.”

Teams of up to six members are invited to compete for prizes in categories for the tallest sand structure, best family entry, most technically- daring, best overall construction and people’s choice. They will have three hours to create their masterpieces, using their own equipment, but the organisers say that motorised diggers are not allowed.

Liz Walder, director of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales, said they are eager to exploit links between architecture and tourism for the benefit of the sector, and highlight the wonderful environment of west Wales.”

The competition takes place on July 2nd, and the closing date for registration of entries on 02920 228987 or rsaw@ inst.riba.org - is June 17th.
