STOURBRIDGE fencing star Emma Potter continued her excellent year with silver at the Birmingham International Tournament.

Potter, now ranked 11th in the country, picked up her best result to date at the event on Easter Sunday.

The Stourbridge Fencing Club member came from behind to snatch a dramatic 15-14 semi-final win but found Camden’s Alice Watson a step too far in the final.

Potter had previously claimed silver at the Cambridge Open and bronze at the Merseyside Open earlier in the year.

On Saturday, 70-year-old Stour fencer Peter Baron finished 43rd out of 70 in the strong men’s sabre category.

Baron has been selected for both the foil and sabre events at the World Championships in October.

Meanwhile, Jane Baron has been selected for the England team for the Veterans Home international in Dublin next month but just missed out on the World Championships.

Both will be going to the European individual championships just days after the Dublin event.

Stourbridge Fencing Club’s new junior group is now flourishing with the youngest age group now full.

Older would-be-fencers are encouraged to join the regular beginners’ classes which have been just been revised and now run over a five-week taster course.
