Top Of The Pops goes on the road

Western Telegraph: A live show of Top Of The Pops is to be brought to the stage A live show of Top Of The Pops is to be brought to the stage

Top Of The Pops is becoming a stage show six years after it was axed from television.

The production, which organisers described as "a nostalgic interactive jukebox", will feature singers, dancers, a live band and footage from the BBC's vaults.

Dominic Walker, from BBC Worldwide, said: "We are delighted to have signed a licensing deal with Flying Entertainment and look forward to working with them on Top Of The Pops Live."

The show, produced by the team behind the Michael Jackson musical Thriller - Live, opens in Eastbourne in October before a UK tour including performances in Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

There will also be a performance in Manchester - where the show began in a disused church in 1964.

Director and choreographer Gary Lloyd said: "Bringing Top Of The Pops to the stage has been an exciting process.

"With today's technology and using all of the iconic moments Top Of The Pops brings, this show will excite audiences old and new.

"As a music lover who grew up following the charts with Top Of The Pops as the highlight of the week, this is a dream show to work on. I am very much looking forward to getting it out there to all those people who did the same and taking them on a rockin' journey down memory lane."

The much-loved show was a viewing staple for 42 years until it was dropped in 2006 after falling audiences.

Episodes from the archives have been repeated on BBC4 and it is revived annually for a Christmas Day edition.
