Gallery yet to see the light

A well-known artist has taken her work out of the exhibition space, at Fishguard's new town hall, as she fears a design fault in the gallery could damage it.

Elizabeth Cramp took down her exhibition Doers after she found there was no UV filter on the glass roof of the gallery.

The collection of watercolours portrays people producing the town's Last Invasion tapestry and the Fishguard Music Festival. It also features local characters including street sweepers and greengrocers.

Mrs Cramp explained exposure to sunlight could damage the paintings.

"It's a lovely little gallery, I was thrilled to have my work there," she said.

"When the sun's not shining the light is lovely."

Mrs Cramp has made the council and the architect aware of the problem and is confident a solution will be reached.

Pembrokeshire County Council confirmed: "Arrangements are in place to fit a UV filter to the glass ceiling of the gallery while signage to both the gallery and the Last Invasion tapestry will be erected shortly."

However, chairman of Fishguard Arts Society, Gaynor McMorrin, remained critical.

"The new exhibition space is flawed," she said. Mrs McMorrin was also concerned Fishguard's cultural centres are not adequately signposted.

She said that Fishguard Arts Society has been asking about proper signs for Theatr Gwaun since before Easter and there were no signs for the gallery and tapestry.

"It is a matter in desperate need of urgent action."
