Walk's on the wild side

The sorry state of one of Fishguard's most popular walks is still causing concern for councillors.

It is hoped the Marine Walk will be the focus of a £500,000 project in the near future, but councillors say drastic improvements are needed in the meantime.

Cllr Gwilym Price drew attention to the path's deterioration at a Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council meeting.

He said: "I recently walked there with my grandchildren, and thought it could be quite dangerous.

"Some of the walks and scenery are obscured by gorse and bracken, "It's deteriorating rapidly and the fences are in a state of collapse. Something must be done immediately."

A section of the path has been closed, and another is being hemmed in by vegetation.

Cllr Henry Jones told the council responsibility for the walk was shared between two county council departments, and money had been promised to replace fallen fencing.

He added that a co-ordinated approach was needed, but some work would be done in the near future.

He said: "There is a feeling that everyone is holding back because of this big scheme, and feeling the solution is around the corner. But I can't see why the scheme should stop routine maintenance of the path.

"Some of the fences are extremely dangerous. We are not quite at the stage where someone could fall over the cliff, but it's not far away."

Cllr Sian James said: "We should take on some responsibility for this ourselves, and should have done something sooner if it's that bad."

Other councillors were reluctant to take on what was seen as a county council responsibility, and wanted more information about the work done to date.

The council agreed to ask for more information about maintenance of the walk.
