Revellers flocked to Fishguard Square for the town’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, but the committee that organises the event is hoping to attract volunteers after its membership dwindled to just four.
Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council discussed how to help secure the future of the event at last week’s meeting.
However, members of the New Year’s Eve committee were surprised to find the issue on the agenda, fearing it could give the impression the future of the popular street party was in doubt.
County Councillor Sian James, chairman of the event’s committee, said: “We have no intention of finishing the event. I was concerned to see it on the agenda, which gives the impression that it’s at risk.
“We will be holding an open meeting and appealing for more committee members to join in.
“We feel strongly that it must continue, but we need more people on the committee.”
She said the committee needs to grow for the event to become an even bigger success.
She added: “I have done this for more than ten years, and that’s why I feel I need a break and plan to stand down as chairman.
“The committee has dwindled to just four, but they are four very active members, and we are seeking to strengthen this independent organisation.
“We are looking at it very positively, but we need the committee to grow for it to work.”
At the town council meeting, Cllr Henry James said there was no intention to usurp the committee.
He said: “The town council should show the committee that they are prepared, not only to put funds towards it, but also effort. Cllr Gwilym Price praised the committee for their efforts. He said: “This year it was outstanding. There were no problems on the streets and everyone was happy.”
An open meeting will be held in the near future to invite people to get involved.
Speaking after the meeting, Cllr James added: “I am very confident that those who enjoy the event will come forward to get involved.”
