A county councillor is urging local residents not to remain silent about the proposed closure of Goodwick library.
The library is due to be closed at the end of February after figures from Pembrokeshire county council showed that only 65 active borrowers, or 3.5% of Goodwick’s population, were actually using the branch.
The council has invited Goodwick library members to take advantage of the longer opening hours and use of the superior resources at Fishguard library, including disabled facilities.
But Cllr Moira Lewis believes that because of the distance, and the hill Goodwick residents will have to negotiate, “there will be lots of pensioners who can’t get there.”
She said it will “not be the same town” once the library closes and the closure will have a negative impact on the community as a whole.
However, Cabinet member Cllr Rob Lewis said that members of the county council had the opportunity to express concerns before the decision was made.
The cabinet decision could also have been called in but no attempt was made to do so, Cllr Rob Lewis said.
However, Cllr Moira Lewis is refusing to give up and is calling for everyone concerned to voice their opinions.
Cllr Moira Lewis has received more than 20 letters from people writing “how disgusted they are” at the proposed closure, she said.
Anybody with any objections can write to Cllr Moira Lewis at: 45 Seaview Crescent, Goodwick, SA64 OAZ.
