MR E. JOHNSON

ELWYN Johnson, Penrhyn Bach, Poppit, died at Parc y Llyn Nursing Home, Ambleston, on December 27th, 2012, aged 86. He had resided there for a few weeks, after periods at both Glangwili and Cardigan Hospitals.

Elwyn was born at Gernos Farm, Cippyn, a son of the late Jim and Martha Johnson, and the family moved some two miles to Penrhyn Bach when Elwyn was very young. He spent the rest of his life there, together with his brother Hywel, late parents and sister Elnah, who died in 1973.

He lost his mother as a teenager.

Elwyn and Hywel farmed at Penrhyn Bach and produced milk until the end of the churns in the mid 1970s, when they took their load down to Poppit on a daily basis to meet the lorry. Both also could be called pioneers in the local farming community of Cippyn, St Dogmaels, as they were the first to buy a baler and combine harvester in the 1960s and they acted as contractors to the whole district for many years.

They also had a keen interest in cars and it was customary for many years to see a new car regularly arriving on the yard of Penrhyn Bach.

Hywel and Elwyn served as senior officer of the Penrhyn Coastguard Company for many years and his interest in their daily activities did not waiver to the end.

In recent years ill health dogged him from leading his previous active life, but was thankful for the care given to him by doctors, local nurses and carers, together with the brotherly love of Hywel.

The funeral was held on January 9th with the cortege departing from Penrhyn Bach to Bryn Bethel Cemetery, Moylegrove, to lay Elwyn to rest with his family members who attended Bryn Salem Congregational Chapel, Cippyn, which is now derelict.

The service was officiated by Rev Roger Morgan, Bethabara, who read a tribute written by Geraint James (formerly of Trecwn Isaf). A large representation of neighbours and friends had gathered, together with local lifeboat and coastguard company representatives and senior regional officers.

The bearers were Rob Daley, Penrhyn Mawr; Merfyn Griffiths, Delfryn; Gareth and Geraint James, Tredryssi Fawr (formerly of Trecwn).
