DR P. NORTON

LITTLE HAVEN AND NARBERTH

PETER Richard Norton, formerly of Little Haven, and a scientist at CERN European Centre for Nuclear Research, died recently at the age of 67.

He also held a post at the Science Research Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

A former pupil of Sir Thomas Sedleys School, Kent, he was offered scholarships at both Oxford and Cambridge, becoming an outstanding physicist.

Following his graduation from Jesus College, Oxford with a First Class Physics Degree and later a D Phil, he took up a research post at Danesbury Laboratory, Cheshire, working in collaboration with UK and EU Research Institutes.

His teaching of physics encompassed contributions in the USA and Lancaster and Glasgow Universities as well as Royal Hollaway and Imperial Colleagues University of London.

He retired just before the recent announcement of the discovery of the particle with all the hallmarks of the Higgs Boson. These complimentary results gave him enormous pleasure, bearing the fruits of precision leadership and proven sustained team effort.

In the final years of his career he headed the RAL Group developing new ideas and editing reports for future accelorates for British particle physics.

He also held a significant role in negotiating the finer aspects of the UK’s CERN membership with sustained presence at EU budget meetings in Brussels and Paris.

A talented musician, he was also an enthusiast of British folk and classical music, and a doyenne of quizzes and crosswords.

He revived his lifelong interest in ornothology through retirement into the inspirational landscapes of the Pembrokeshire coast and countryside, living at Little Haven and Narberth.

Peter will be remembered by all who knew him as a man of outstanding intellect.

He is survived by his wife Yve (Dreenhill), his daughter Eleanor and grandson Toby James.

 

MRS J. M. PRICE

CARDIGAN

AFTER a short illness, Jean Margaret Price died at Glangwili Hospital on May 5th. She was 78.

Jean was born and brought up in Cwmaman near Aberdare, the daughter of Jack and Maggie Gillett.

She was the wonderful wife of her ever-loving husband Bill, and caring mother to her sons, Berwyn, Harvey and David.

After leaving school, Jean was employed by a television manufacturer in Aberdare.

She met Bill while on holiday in the Boncath area, and they were married in August 1963.

Due to Bill’s employment, he and Jean lived and worked in various parts of England, Wales and Scotland. On retirement, they settled happily in Pen Parc, near Cardigan.

Because of her friendly and cheerful disposition, Jean easily made friends wherever she was. Her main interests were her family and music. Her taste in music ranged from pop, country and western to opera.

Jean was gifted with a good singing voice, and in her younger days she was frequently asked to sing at various functions.

A true, loving and generous lady, Jean will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

There was a large attendance at her funeral on May 14th at Parc Gwyn. Rev John Bennet presided over the service.

Jean’s son David Price gave a moving eulogy, which celebrated her life as a devoted wife and mother, and her love of music.

The principal mourners were: William Price (husband); Berwyn and Gwyneth Price, Harvey Price and Emma Summers, David Price and Kate Durrant (sons and daughters-in-law); Esther Poar (sister); Leighton Poar (nephew); Paul Bowen and Cheryl Yorath (nephew and partner); Ena Price and Gwendoline Morshead (sisters- in-law); Nigel and Rosamund Lewis, Hayley Lewis, Jane Rotie and Alexandra Stanbridge (nephews and nieces); Laura Manca (great niece).

The funeral was attended by a large number of close relatives and family friends.

The pall bearers were Berwyn Price, David Price, Jane Rotie and Hayley Lewis.

Apologies were received from Russell and Hazel Price (brother-in-law and sister-inlaw) and Eirwen Gillett (sister- in-law).

Donations for the Heart Foundation are being received by Colin Phillips, 4 Morgan Street, Cardigan, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

MR T. F. A. EDWARDS

RHOSCROWTHER

THE death occurred on May 1st at Withybush Hospital of Trevor Frederick Arthur Edwards, of Eastington Farm, Rhoscrowther.

Trevor was born at Sawdern Farm in 1927 where he lived until 1990 when he moved to live with his sister Sybil on the neighbouring farm Eastington, which the family had farmed with Sawdern since 1964.

As a boy he attended Pwllcrochan School and enjoyed recalling the walk to school and also the names of the other children who lived in Popton and Rhoscrowther villages.

Trevor was a quiet reserved man who loved the land and his animals, so much so that he wouldn’t retire – he was always going to work to the end and he did.

He leaves to mourn his sister Sybil; Joy, Denise and Desmond, Rowland and Joanne, Rosemary and Trevor (cousins) and friends and neighbours.

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn and was officiated by Rev G. Howell and there were family flowers only.

Trevors ashes were interred in one of the family graves at Rhoscrowther Cemetery.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son, Pembroke Dock.

 

MRS E. DAVIES

WOODEN (formerly of Brynmeurig)

THE funeral took place on April 19th of Elizabeth (Betty) Davies, who died at Pencoed Residential Home on April 11th, aged 92.

She was predeceased by her husband Dai in 1996 and her son Wyn in January of this year. The service was officiated by Rev Betti Wyn James.

Betty was an accomplished musician and could play the cello, violin and the piano.

She was a seamstress and her work was meticulous.

She successfully made wedding dresses, curtains and alterations and even restored furniture, she could turn her hand to anything.

Betty spent most of her married life in Brynmeurig, Carmarthen. She was fortunate to celebrate more than 50 years of marriage to Dai.

They had one son Wyn, who married Sue in 1976 and both Betty and Dai were thrilled to have had three grandchildren Shelley, Vyv and Andrew. They were both very proud of their academic and practical achievements.

Betty worked in Williams’ curtain shop in Carmarthen and later in a ladies clothes shop in King Street.

Before her retirement she worked at Trinity College, Carmarthen.

After Dai’s death in 1996, Betty’s own health started to deteriorate and in 2011 she became frail and needed 24- hour care.

She became a resident in Pencoed Residential Home, Wooden, where she was lovingly cared for. This was also closer for Wyn and family to visit.

She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends, also by residents and carers at Pencoed.

Family left to mourn are: Sue Davies (daughter-inlaw); Shelley and Phil (granddaughter and husband); Vyv and Mel (grandson and wife); Andrew and Nicky (grandson and partner); Hannah Davies (sister); Nia, Faye and Cian (great grandchildren); Derek and Gwenlais Rees, Irfon and Margaret Rees, Morlais Rees (nephews and wives); Mair Lewis, Delyth and Mike Lewis Rawlings (cousins).

There were family flowers only, which were later placed on Wyn’s grave at St Michaels Cemetery, Pembroke.

Donations in lieu of flowers for Cancer Research are being received by E. C.

MRS B. ROACH

FISHGUARD

A LARGE gathering of family and friends attended the funeral service of Barbara Roach on May 10th at St Peter’s Church, Goodwick.

Barbara was a dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

The service was led by Rev Dr Jennie Annis.

Donations in memory for Wales Air Ambulance are being received by Paul Jenkins and Sons, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

MR K. GRIFFITHS

PEMBROKE DOCK

KEN Griffiths, of Argyle Street, Pembroke Dock, died at Withybush Hospital on April 16th. He was 85.

Originally from Bancffosewen, he moved to Pembrokeshire in 1956. He devoted his working life to education in Pembrokeshire and was a college lecturer in Pembrokeshire College, retiring in 1984.

He also served in India with the Royal Air Force.

For many years he was a volunteer with the Citizens Advice Bureau, well known and highly regarded in the community, and a familiar figure in the town as he enjoyed walking.

He was predeceased by his wife Beryl in 2006.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Kathryn Morris (daughter); Michael Morris (son-in-law); Elisa Morris and Rhys Morris (grandchildren).

The service was held at Parc Gwyn and was officiated by Rev T. Evan Morgan, Cardiff. The bearers were Michael and Rhys Morris, Elwyn and Grant Morris.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu to NSPCC being received by E.
