Mrs E. Marren

Milford Haven

THE death occurred at Withybush Hospital on May 28 of Mrs Ellen (Nell) Marren, of Marble Hall Close, Milford Haven. She was 96.

Born in Co Mayo in the Republic of Ireland, she left in 1935 to train as a nurse in London. She met Joe and the married and moved to Milford Haven, originally Hakin Point and had six children.

Nell was an avid reader and enjoyed crosswords, she enjoyed Havenhurst Day Centre.

She was sociable, fun loving, independent and had a marvellous sense of humour.

She regularly attended St Francis Roman Catholic Church in Milford Haven.

She was predeceased by her husband Joe in 2010 and her sons Michael and Bernie.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Joe and Margaret Marren (son and daughter-in-law); Gileen and Jose Cano (daughter and son-in-law); Ann Marren and John Hill (daughter and partner); Tricia and John Broughton (daughter and son-in-law); Farrah Marren (daughter-in-law); Ruth, John, Michael, Tom, Marc, Natasha, Nicholas, Christopher, Emily and Liam (grandchildren).

The service was held at St Francis Church, Milford Haven followed by interment at Milford Haven cemetery and was officiated by Father Paul.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu to St Francis RC Church, Milford a/c 08307105, sort code 541007.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, Milford Haven.

 

Mr P. R. Jordan

Hodgeston

THE death occurred at Withybush Hospital on June 18 of Philip Reginald ‘Reg’ Jordan, of Church View, Hodgeston.

He was 78.

He was born and raised at Orchard Buildings, Pembroke, before marrying Nesta in 1956. They lived briefly in Jameston before making their home in Hodgeston with their son Philip, who predeceased him in 2011.

Principal mourners are: Nesta (wife); Richard (grandson); Irene (sister); Kathryn (daughter-in-law); Paul and Karen (brother-in-law and partner); Viv and Gill (brother- in-law and wife); Kelly and Andrew, Kayte and Dave (nieces and partners); Sophie and Emma (nieces); and numerous other relations.

The funeral service was held at Manorbier Church followed by interment in the churchyard. The bearers were Richard Jordan (grandson), Paul and Viv John(brothers-in-law) and Mervyn John (lifelong friend).

There were family flowers only, but donations in lieu for The Parkinsons Disease Society (Pembrokeshire Branch) may be sent to John Roberts and Son, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mrs aMy lilian GriffiTHs HavErfordWEsT MRS Amy Lilian Griffiths (nee Watts) died at Withybush Hospital on May 18 at the age of 76.

She was born and brought up in Walwyn’s Castle , one of six children born to Victor and Lilian Watts, of Rectory Farm and she was predeceased by her parents and brothers David and Tom, and sister Mary.

After attending the local primary school and Milford Grammar School, Amy worked first at T. P. Hughes and then Rees and Hayden Accountants, Haverfordwest for a number of years.

In 1962 she married Brian and became a very proud mother to Adrian, Fiona and Neil.

Amy’s main interests centred around her family, and she loved looking after her grandchildren. Nevertheless, when she became mayoress of Haverfordwest in 1994 and Sheriff ’s Lady in 1996, she carried out her duties with enthusiasm and dignity.

Sadly, in June 2006 she suffered a brain haemorrhage which robbed her of her speech and mobility, but she remained cheerful.

The affection in which Amy was held was evident by the number of people who attended the funeral at St Martin’s Church, Haverfordwest and at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.

Principal mourners were: Brian (husband); Adrian and Kaye (son and partner); Fiona and Nigel (daughter and son-in-law); Neil and Fiona (son and daughter-inlaw); Nia, Joy, Carwyn, Iwan, James, George, Macy, Poppy and Lily (grandchildren); Gwen and Bartle Morgan (sister and brother-in-law); Vivian Griffths, John and Julia Griffiths, and Mair Beynon (brothers-in-law and sisters- in-law); Caroline Davies, Carolyn and Pete Gowman, Lynda Griffiths, Elin Beynon, Timothy and Mark Watts (nieces and nephews).

Unable to attend were Norman Watts (brother); Ron Beynon (brother-in-law); Christine Gates (niece) and family (America); Leighton Griffiths ( nephew, serving in Afghanistan), and other relatives and close friends too numerous to mention.

Rev Father Paul Mackness officiated at the church and also at Parc Gwyn, and the bearers were Timothy and Mark Watts nephews), Phillip Walker and Brian Griffiths (family friends).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas and Son, Freystrop.

Mr John Woodward

PEMbrokE

MR JOHN George Woodward of Lords Meadows Farm, Pembroke died peacefully at Withybush Hospital on June 8. He was 71.

John will be missed by his sisters Mary-Rose Sinclair and Carol Jenkins, brothersin- law Geoffrey Sinclair and John Jenkins, nephews Bruce and Jack and his many friends. He was born in Pembroke in 1942 and after Pembroke Grammar School obtained a degree in Freshwater Zoology.

He worked for some years for the Somerset and Devon River Authorities before going to Zambia for three years to do research on Lake Kariba.

He travelled in Africa and India and spent some time on a Kibbutz in Israel before returning to the family farm.

He also worked for Mainport Engineering during the years before his retirement.

John was a kind and understanding man, always the first to help anyone. He loved his farm, his horses and his lurcher Slippy.

John was a quiet, self-contained, man of few words but when he spoke it was with humour and without malice.

A man who loved animals and the countryside but who nevertheless could fit in anywhere.

We are devastated by his loss and together with his friends will remember him with love. He bore his illness with courage and dignity.

His funeral on June 14 at the Tabernacle URC was attended by family, friends from the local farming and riding communities and from his student days as well as representatives from Mainport Engineering.

The service was taken by Rev Chris Tolley and the organist Mr Rees.

The bearers were his friend Adrian Roach and his cousins Wyn and Lloyd Jenkins and Sean Waters. Brotherin- law Geoffrey Sinclair gave the eulogy and Carol Jenkins read the poem Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening by Robert Frost. John was buried at St Michael’s Cemetery.

Mr J. G. Roberts

Portfield Gate

THE funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on April 30 of Mr James Glyn Roberts who passed away at his home on April 22 after fighting cancer for the last 12 months. He was 62.

Glyn was the eldest son of George and Winnie Roberts and elder brother of Hugh.

Glyn was raised at Corner Farm and educated at Barn Street and Haverfordwest Secondary Modern Schools.

After leaving school he went to work on the family farm.

In his younger days Glyn was an active member of Keyston YFC taking part in competitions such as stock judging, trailer handling and talent shows. While a member of Keyston YFC he met his wife Brenda Davies and they were married in April 1973.

Glyn became actively involved in the community. He joined Camrose Community Centre management committee.

He was a community councillor for 24 years representing the Lambston Ward and was chairman several times. He was also a member of the South West Wales Branch of the National Vintage Tractor and Engine Club and Treffgarne Discussion Group. In 1987 he joined Camrose Vintage Working Day Committee and was later chairman for four years. The show thrived under his leadership.

He was elected president for this year in recognition for all the work he did for the Vintage Show.

Glyn was a good husband to Brenda, brother and brotherin- law to Hugh and Sylvia, uncle to Carol, Carwyn, Peter, Sophie, Claire, Mark, Abbie, Lisa, Chris, David and Kate, great uncle to Amber and Joshua, nephew to Mrs Thelma Davies and son-inlaw to Mrs Joyce Davies.

His popularity was evident by the large attendance at his funeral where the officiating ministers were Rev A. Rendell, Rev M. Rowlands and Rev I. Williams. The eulogy was given by close friend Dilwyn Phillips. The bearers were Roger Mathias, Herbie Evans, Graham Jenkins, Geoff Cousins, Julian Williams and Dilwyn Phillips.

There were family flowers with donations to the Paul Sartori Foundation being received by Mr Ken Durham, Keyston Lodge, Keyston, Haverfordwest SA62 6EE.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by F G Rees and Son, Portfield Gate.

 

Mrs Hilda Mary Simmonds

Hakin

THE death occurred at home on June 18th of Mrs Hilda Mary Simmonds (Mary) of Wellington Road, Hakin at the age of 81.

Originally from Hakin, she was a telephonist, a seasonal worker at local farms and Milford Cold Storage. In later years she worked for her sister Ray Venkort in her bakery shops. Before retirement she worked as a shop assistant in the Cockney Boys Fruit Shop in Charles Street.

Her interests included being an avid supporter and keen player of Milford Haven and county bowls club. She was a popular and successful county president for West Wales Ladies Bowling Association in 1992. She enjoyed playing bingo on a Tuesday night at the Catholic Church Hall with Phyllis and Cally.

Mary had a strong faith, she was brought up in Waterloo Road, Hakin where she attended St Davids Church, Hubberston, when she moved to Milford, the Methodist Church and over the last few years on returning to Hakin, St Mary’s Church.

She was predeceased by her husband Derick Simmonds.

The funeral service was held at St David’s Church, Hubberston followed by interment at Milford Haven cemetery.
