MRS E H JONES

FISHGUARD

AFTER a short illness Mrs Evelyn Jones peacefully passed away without pain or suffering on Ward 10, Withybush Hospital, on May 23 aged 92 years. Evelyn, Sladeway, Fishguard was the beloved wife of the late Canon Glyn Jones, loving and much loved mother of Susan and dear sister of Elizabeth (Betty).

Although she had spent most of her life in Pembrokeshire, Evelyn was born in Penybanc, Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, in 1920 and was brought up there. She attended Llandeilo Primary School and later moved on to the Grammar School. After school, Evelyn decided to become a nurse and started her training at the County Infirmary, Carmarthen. She became a state registered nurse in 1942 and also a State Certified Midwife. She had worked at Stouthall Maternity Hospital, Swansea and was a district nurse in Swansea.

Whilst nursing in Carmarthen, she met her future husband, Glyn who was at college in Lampeter. He later became curate of Monkton, Pembroke and after their marriage in 1946 she moved to Pembrokeshire, giving up her nursing career to assist her husband in his ministerial role. They later moved back to their home county of Carmarthenshire from 1948- 1951 after Glyn became curate of Ammanford. She returned to Pembrokeshire in 1951 when Glyn became Rector of St Nicholas and Granston, with Mathry added on in 1969 and Jordanston added in 1978.

She fully immersed herself helping her husband in his parishes, playing the organ at services, cleaning and decorating the churches for Sundays and festivals, helping to organise fund raising events and offering a warm welcome and generous hospitality to all at the rectory.

In 1959 she returned to her chosen vocation as a nurse and worked at the Priory Mount Hospital/St Thomas’ Hospital, Haverfordwest, firstly as a midwife and then on the geriatric wards. She was a ward sister there for many years. From St Thomas’ Hospital she moved on to the County Hospital and then was involved in preparing Withybush Hosptial ready for its opening before taking up her position as a ward sister on the geriatric wards of Withybush Hospital. She retired from there in 1981 having built up a reputation as a caring and much respected member of the nursing profession.

For one year after that she took on a part time position as sister tutor at Pembrokeshire College, lecturing on caring at all ages of life.

After Canon Glyn’s retirement in 1986 she and her husband moved from St Nicholas Rectory into Fishguard.

Because of her work at the hospital and in former parishes she was a well known and well respected figure in the area.

Her main love was her family and she gave loyal and devoted care and concern to her late husband Glyn and to her only daughter, Susan.

Her interests were music, gardening, caring for others and always offering kindness, generosity and warm hospitality to everyone at her home. She was a member of the Ladies Luncheon Club.

In her latter years she had enjoyed visiting other parts of the country, holidaying in England, Ireland and France and travelling backwards and forwards from Fishguard to North Somerset.
